WZ. 95 Beryl

The Karabinek Szturmowy Wzór 1996 "Beryl", Assault rifle model 1996 "Beryllium" is a Polish made 5.56 assault [redacted]. The WZ. 96 is the standard rifle of the Polish military, it is getting replaced by the MSBS Grot C16.

The WZ. 96 came into service in 1997. Replacing the WZ. 88 "Tantal". The WZ. 96 is based of the WZ. 88 (Which is based of the AKM and not the AK74), but chambered in 5.56, new polymer handguards and a new folding stock. The WZ. 96 got 2 midlife upgrades during its lifespan. in 2004 new polymer furniture with a fixed forgrip and side rails, dogleg picatiny rail, called the WZ. 96B. In 2009 with new railed metal handguards and collapsible stock.
The WZ. 96 was used by the Polish during the Iraq war, war in afghanistan and the Kosovo conflict. The Beryl was well liked by Polish troops.

The rifle  works mechanically the same as the AKM. Long stroke gas piston and 2 lug rotating bolt. The WZ. 96 is based of the older WZ. 88 and has the same features. Like that selector has been split into 2. The "AK" dust cover selector lever acts as the safety, and the lever on the left side acts as a selector between semi, 3 round burst and fully automatic. The gas tube is mounted in a different way and it has a extended magazine release.

The WZ. 96 may be replaced in frontline service, it will still remain in service by the Polish army for a long time probably. The Polish Reserves and Territorial defence force will still use this rifle over the Grot C16 for years to come
