The Howa Type 20 5.56MM rifle is the new standard issue rifle of the Japanese Ground Self-Defence Forces, replacing the aging Type 89 rifle.
In 2014, the JGSDF was in search for a new rifle, Howa came up with a prototype rifle (HOWA 5.56) and it was officialy chosen in 2019 and designated the Type 20.
The Type 20 uses a short stroke gas piston and rotating bolt. Externally, it looks similair to the ACR, but its not a direct copy. The Type 20 is chambered in 5.56x45mm and is being fed by 30 round STANAG magazines. The barrel 13 inch - 330mm long. The handguard features mlok slots and the stock is adjustable.
